Have you ever felt that there has to be more to life than this? Amidst all the chaos and uncertainty of our existence, there seems to be a burning ache inside each of us, drawing us towards some unknown purpose.

As we search for the source and fulfillment of our desires, our passions lead us to discover that some paths leave us cold, while others bring us closer to the fire of our truest longings. This is a book about that search, in all of its complexities and paradoxes.

Fire is the first book of the Elemental Endeavors series. Using poetry, prose, and photography, T. Jason Vanderlaan explores the concepts of chaos and creativity, uncertainty and possibility, passion and our desire for true life.

I was surprised to find how much I liked this book. It was way beyond my expectations. The Bubble was intense, This One’s for Free made me laugh out loud (yes, even though I was sitting alone in my low-lit living room), the first line of Rant received applause, Deeper took my breath away (or better, gave me breath), and many others provided my heart with words for experiences that haven’t been spoken of.

I’m tempted to say it’s a quick read, but I know that it will be a book I go back to time and again. Although I’ve read every page, I’m clearly not “done” with the book. I’m usually not that “into” poetry because didn’t grow up around it and it doesn’t always make sense to me. But T. Jason Vanderlaan’s writing explores a variety of emotions and experiences that are “common” to the human experience.
